In the face of rising economic losses from natural disasters, the Global Facility for Disaster Reduction and Recovery (GFDRR) and the World Bank organized the second World Reconstruction Conference (WRC2) in partnership with the European Union, United Nations Development Programme, United Nations Office for Disaster Risk Reduction, and other development partners.
WRC2, which was held at the World Bank Group headquarters from September 10–12, 2014, was a global conference focused on post-disaster recovery and reconstruction. The conference assembled over 500 practitioners and policy makers from governments, international organizations, NGOs, academia, and the private sector to explore the nexus between resilient recovery efforts and sustainable poverty reduction. The conference built on the success of the first WRC, held in 2011 in Geneva, Switzerland.
Through its Conference Statement for Recovery, WRC2 also helped to inform the final round of discussions on the second Hyogo Framework for Action (HFA) which was adopted at the World Conference on Disaster Risk Reduction in March 2015 in Sendai, Japan.
In addition, WRC2 – through its discussions, partnerships, and products launch - has helped to inform the work of GFDRR and other partners on the ground in post-disaster situations. The conference also continues to advice the post-2015 development framework.
To advance consensus on resilient recovery as an imperative for sustainable development and poverty reduction.
