The Understanding Risk Balkans Conference was held in Belgrade, Serbia on September 17-19, 2018.

The vision of the conference helped further the understanding of risk by supporting a network of experts and practitioners that shared knowledge and experience, and discussed best practices and innovative approaches in assessing risk and communicating risk information. UR has become the preeminent platform for collaboration, knowledge sharing, and innovation in identifying and assessing disaster risk.

Audience

The conference attracted leading experts and practitioners from a wide range of sectors representing government agencies, the private sector, multilateral organizations, NGOs, research institutions, civil society, among others.

Pre-conference Events

Prior to the main conference, UR Balkans hosted the “Disaster-Resilient Balkans: Empowering Young Professionals.” It was directed to both young professionals and researchers, and was organized by the Water Youth Network. The second pre-conference event “Fundamentals of Disaster Risk Financing: Training,” aimed to help countries improve their financial resilience against natural disasters.

General Program

Day 1 (September 17) took place at the Belgrade City Hall. It consisted of an opening ceremony with keynote speakers and Ignite presentations.

Days 2 and 3 (September 18 & 19) took place at the Yugoslav Film Archive Museum, where 12 technical sessions were offered.
