We are delighted to invite you to the launch meeting of the Disaster Mobility Data Network (DMDN) on July 22, 2021 at 9:00 am - 10:00 am EST.

Changes in mobile phone technology, notably the near-ubiquity in many places of GPS-enabled smartphones, have altered the ways that response agencies and researchers understand and respond to crises. As this data becomes mainstream in emergency management, key issues of data capacity and data literacy - as well as ethics, privacy, and data protection - become increasingly pressing.

The Network will provide a platform for data scientists and the disaster risk management community to connect and share best practices around use of mobility data for disaster preparedness and response. Join us for the inaugural call featuring:

  • Sylvain Ponserre (Internal Displacement Monitoring Center): Data on post-disaster displacement: challenges and gaps.
  • Guanghua Chi (Facebook): New short-term population displacement methodology in FB Disaster Maps.
  • Andrew Schroeder and Maham Khan (Direct Relief / GFDRR): Disaster mobility situation reports; roadmap for the DMDN.
  • Open discussion with network members: Harnessing mobility data for disaster risk management.
