15 South African officials visited last week Ahmedabad to learn from the city’s Heat Action Plan.
The event was sponsored by the country’s National Treasury with the Swiss Secretariat for Economic Affairs and the City Resilience Program of the World Bank’s Global Facility for Disaster Reduction and Recovery.
Scaling up resilience in Algeria is a mission possible. It requires all hands on deck to implement holistic, and integrated approaches. The lessons learned from past disasters and the priorities identified to tackle disaster and climate challenges offer a glimpse into the opportunities of a future where people in Algeria are safer and better prepared for natural hazards.
Will South African cities continue to swelter under heat waves? Global climate change means that unfortunately the answer is yes. But heat waves need not be health crises. By understanding the ‘hidden hazard’ of extreme heat and implementing responses that put the most vulnerable citizens first, South Africa’s cities can lead the world on climate change adaptation.
