The objective of the grant is to provide on-demand and accelerated post-disaster support to the Government of Tonga in developing baseline databases for post-disaster assessment and recovery, assessing post-disaster damages, losses, and needs, and planning short, medium, and long-term recovery interventions including developing sector-specific recovery plans and preparing recovery financing strategies.The grant supported the procurement of relevant technical experts to support the preparation and implementation of a rapid damage assessment of key sectors and associated
analytical support to develop recommendations for the government’s
post-disaster recovery recovery program. With travel to Tonga not
permitted due to COVID-19 restrictions, support was provided by both remote
and locally based experts.. The specialists provided (i) inputs to rapid assessments to locally
based consultants/government counterparts for damage assessments in critical
sectors (including building/infrastructure, agriculture, housing,
tourism, transport); (ii) provide technical support, coordination, and quality
assurance of data collection to carry out the rapid assessment, and; (iii)
Engineering and analytical support to assess and quantify the extent of damage,
loss and recovery needs.
