This project’s Development Objective is to
contribute to building climate resilience in the Greater Paramaribo area by
reducing the risk of flooding. This objective will be achieved by supporting
the Government of Suriname’s efforts for implementing and initiating a
potential new investment in flood mitigation focusing on the Saramacca Canal,
identified as one of the priorities by the Paramaribo Strategic Flood Risk
Assessment study. The target beneficiaries are the population of Paramaribo
living along the 25 km of Canal, which will significantly be benefiting from a
well-functioning canal and be significantly less exposed to flood risks. The
project will address the recurring floods happening in Paramaribo area by
reducing the risks of floods and improve the overall management of the
Saramacca Canal.
