The objectives of the grant are to (i) assess
the risks and impacts to Bangladesh’s power system infrastructure from extreme
weather and natural hazards, (ii) to inform the Government of Bangladesh policy
frameworks and operational practices to reduce disaster risks for distribution
and transmission, generation, and fuel supply, and (iii) to build capacity so
that operations and policy incorporate international best practices on power
system resilience.
The engagement will include a readiness
assessment of the Bangladesh Rural Electrification Board (BREB) distribution
system, directly informing innovative resilience solutions under the World
Bank’s US$500 million Bangladesh Electricity Distribution Modernization
financing program (P174650), and contribute toward the
World Bank’s preparation of the rural distribution network master plan and
disaster resilience inputs to Japanese International Cooperation Agency
(JICA) “Integrated Energy and Power Master Plan” (IEPMP) currently expected in 2022.
