This activity will support the Serbian railway sector by completing a
key institutional component in strengthening disaster management preparedness –
a Contingency Plan. This would be completed under the framework
of a Safety Management System (SMS) which will be financed by the World Bank
MPA Serbia Railway Sector Modernization
(P170868), currently under
preparation. Recent COVID19 pandemic
highlighted the need within the Government of Serbia (GoS) and the railway
companies to strengthen the capacity to respond to national emergencies. With the support from JIT Japan-World Bank
program, the World Bank team will work closely with Serbian rail counterparts to
complete and implement the Contingency Plan within the SMS component. The Contingency plan will primarily address
natural hazards such as floods, landslides, drought, forest fires, and
earthquakes, and will be expanded to pandemics. The plan will include not only
operational measures, but also infrastructure and equipment investments to
better position the railways in Serbia in responding to national
emergencies.
