The Central American Probabilistic Risk Assessment (CAPRA) Platform
Analytical work funded by GFDRR helped in the creation of the Central American Probabilistic Risk Assessment (CAPRA), a major initiative to understand and communicate disaster risk that provides an information platform to assist decision making in the public and the private sector.
This platform provides a set of tools to communicate and support decisions related to disaster risk at local, national, and regional levels. CAPRA builds upon the work of disaster risk experts to provide a geographic information system (GIS) on risk generated by adverse natural events. Led by the Central American Center for the Coordination of Disaster Prevention (CEPREDENAC), in collaboration with Central American governments, the UN’s International Strategy for Disaster Reduction, the Inter American Development Bank, and the World Bank, the platform is to support decision makers in sectors such as emergency management, land use planning, public investment, and financial markets for risk transfer.
