In many countries vulnerable to natural disasters, traditional gender roles and disparities can make either men or women more vulnerable to the effects of the disaster. Global efforts to address these issues have not yet met the level of urgency needed to make effective progress. Therefore, GFDRR and the World Bank are increasingly integrating gender issues in their disaster related initiatives, making it a priority to fight poverty by protecting the groups most vulnerable to disaster. As stated in the Global Partnership Strategy (2009-2012), GFDRR supports countries to incorporate gender dimensions into national Disaster Risk Reduction strategies and include programs targeted to women and children to ensure gender equity during planning for recovery and reconstruction.
